Samblatuust. Hall-kärbsenäpp. A small fluffy piece of moss. The spotted flycatcher. Muscicapa striata.

The spotted flycatcher chicks had surprisingly quickly left from nest on the window ledge of the house. Not satisfied with this discovery, I walked around the garden, among the apple trees. Old spotted flycatchers bustled around the trees and bushes and expressed their uneasiness at my appearance in the garden. Their anxiety even became so great that they invited the neighboring redstarts, robins, wrens and probably other little birds nesting in the immediate vicinity. From this I concluded that the young of the flycatchers are there in the same garden. I stood and looked intently around but saw only adult birds everywhere. Finding some baby birds seemed like a similar endeavor to finding a needle in a haystack. I already took a step to leave the garden, but I turned back again and decided to take a closer look at the crown of an apple tree. At the top of this tree, when I first came to the garden, I saw an old flycatcher, its beak full of insects. Looking closely at the crown of the apple tree, I discovered a fluffy piece of moss right in front of my nose, at eye level. But that piece of moss had eyes and a beak on it, I was face to face with a tiny spotted flycatcher. I was so close to him that I had to take a few steps back to take a picture with the telephoto lens. The baby bird remained still and I began to move around its to find a better shooting angle between the branches. I took as many pictures as I could, using the last pre-sunset light between the branches. And while doing so, the baby bird remained absolutely motionless. Didn’t turn its head, didn’t blink eyes, didn’t adjust its wings or tail. Just as the order of the old birds was obeyed while in the nest, so it continued when leaving the nest. Although I was very close to the baby bird, the old birds had calmed down a bit and the neighboring birds had returned to their activities. After all, the birds sensed that I was not thinking evil thoughts.
